CATL (SHE: 300750) has rolled out its next-generation energy storage battery cell, further expanding its bet in the sector.
The battery giant announced at an event held in Shanghai yesterday that its 587 Ah high-capacity energy storage-specific cell has begun mass production and delivery.
The cell underwent three years of research and testing, achieving a golden balance between legal compliance, compatibility with energy storage stations, system integration, and electrochemistry, CATL said.
The product is designed based on mainstream 20-foot containers and 1,500 V PCS voltage and power ranges, simplifying the system structure and reducing the total number of system components from 30,000 to 18,000.
The cell achieves an energy density of 434 Wh/L, a 10 percent increase over the previous generation. Energy density of energy storage systems using this cell can be improved by 25 percent.
Through improvements in reliability, energy density, lifespan degradation, and system efficiency, the cell’s lifecycle investment return rate has increased by 5 percent compared to the previous generation, CATL said.
The new cell achieves no fire or explosion under overcharging, thermal runaway, or pinprick conditions, and has passed several mandatory standards tests in China.
Through product iterations including 280 Ah and 314 Ah products, CATL has deployed over 256 GWh of energy storage system capacity globally to date, according to the company.
These products are used in over 1,000 energy storage projects worldwide and have maintained a zero-accident record to date, according to CATL.
CATL is the world’s largest EV battery manufacturer, and energy storage is one of its core businesses.
In 2024, CATL’s revenue reached RMB 362 billion ($50 billion), a year-on-year decrease of 9.70 percent, according to its annual report released in March.
The power battery system business generated RMB 253.04 billion in revenue in 2024, contributing 69.90 percent of total revenue, down from 71.15 percent in 2023.
The energy storage battery system business generated revenue of RMB 57.29 billion in 2024, accounting for 15.83 percent of total revenue, up from 14.94 percent in 2023.
