Gotion shows tech muscle with launch of new batteries, announces foray into all-solid-state

Gotion has launched the G-Current, which supports ultra-fast charging, the Stellary Battery, a large cylindrical battery, and announced the Gemstone, an all-solid-state battery.

Gotion High-tech (SHE: 002074) launched two new batteries and announced its entry into the all-solid-state battery space, as the Volkswagen-backed Chinese power cell maker seeks to expand its presence in mid- to high-end electric vehicle (EV) models.

The company released its latest innovations in battery structure and materials as well as its first-generation all-solid-state batteries at its 13th technology conference in Hefei, Anhui province, where it is headquartered, today, sending its Shenzhen-traded shares up by the 10 percent one-day limit.

Gotion today launched a battery called G-Current, saying it supports 5C ultra-fast charging.

In the battery industry, C refers to the charge multiplier of a battery, and 5C means that the pack can theoretically be fully charged in one-fifth of an hour.

Gotion said the G-Current can charge from 0 to 80 percent in 9.8 minutes, to 90 percent in 15 minutes, and from 0 to full in 25 minutes.

The new battery can be used in battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), and support chemistries includes lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and ternary.

The G-Current utilizes a module-less design, which allows for a 30 percent reduction in the number of parts, according to Gotion.

The G-Current battery using LFP cells has a capacity of more than 75 kWh and provides a range of more than 600 kilometers, according to the company.

With ternary cells, the pack can achieve a capacity of more than 100 kWh and is capable of a range of 800 kilometers.

Gotion is bringing ultra-fast charging technology to hybrids with G-Current, saying the battery enables 4C fast charging on hybrids, resulting in a 10-minute charge to 80 percent.

G-Current is already in mass production and allows vehicles to charge as fast as free fall, Gotion said.

The battery pack has one of the best charging performance among new batteries announced in the past year.

On August 16, 2023, CATL launched the Shenxing Superfast Charging Battery, which supports 4C charging and allows for a 400km range on a 10-minute charge.

Gotion has also launched a battery based on high nickel ternary chemistry called Stellary Battery at today’s event, targeting the large cylindrical battery market.

The Stellary Battery cell has a diameter of 46 millimeters, enables 4C fast charging, and will be produced at Gotion’s seventh-generation plant.

The cell has an energy density of 285 Wh/kg, or 775 Wh/L, and can be cycled 2,500 times at room temperature to remain 70 percent healthy, according to Gotion.

The Stellary Battery can charge from 10 percent to 70 percent in nine minutes, and the next-generation factory brings lower costs.

Gotion’s seventh-generation factory has allowed labor costs per GWh of battery production to be reduced by 37.5 percent through automated production, the company said.

Considering the company’s vertical integration and recycling of materials, the next-generation plant achieves a 50 percent reduction in manufacturing costs.

Gotion unveiled Gemstone, an all-solid-state battery, announcing its formal entry into the new battery space.

The battery cell has an energy density of 350 Wh/kg, or 800 Wh/L, which is 40 percent higher than mainstream lithium ternary batteries, Gotion said.

It has a cycle life of more than 3,000 cycles, allowing an EV model to easily achieve 1 million kilometers of driving range over its full life cycle, according to the company.

The Gemstone-based pack has a system energy density of 280 Wh/kg and a range of up to 1,000 kilometers on a single charge, Gotion said.

A conservative estimate is that the all-solid-state battery will begin small-volume production and vehicle-loading trials in 2027, with mass production expected in 2030, Pan Ruijun, Gotion’s chief engineer for the solid-state battery program, said in a communication with media outlets, including CnEVPost, after the launch.

The timing is similar to that revealed by CATL, the world’s largest power battery maker.

On April 28, CATL chief scientist Wu Kai said at an event that the company aims to produce all-solid-state batteries in 2027 in small batches. That’s the first time the battery maker has mentioned a mass production timeline for solid-state batteries.

There are still a lot of fundamental scientific questions to be solved, and once the scientific challenges are solved, there will be problems with industrialization, a CATL spokesperson told CnEVPost earlier this month.

Gotion’s Gemstone uses silicon for its anode material, and the production version is aiming for an energy density of 350 Wh/kg, Pan said.

The battery’s anode material could switch to using lithium metal in the future, enabling higher energy density, according to Pan.
