Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) saw its four millionth China-made vehicle roll off the production line at its Shanghai factory, marking a milestone for its largest global manufacturing facility.
The US electric vehicle (EV) maker announced the milestone today, 14 months after reaching the three-millionth vehicle milestone last October.
The four-millionth China-made Tesla vehicle is a Model Y L six-seat SUV (sport utility vehicle), according to the company.
Over the past six years, Giga Shanghai has contributed nearly half of Tesla’s global EV deliveries, the company emphasized.
Construction on Tesla’s Shanghai facility commenced on January 7, 2019, with operations beginning by year-end. It stands as China’s first wholly foreign-owned automotive manufacturing project.
Giga Shanghai began delivering Model 3 sedans to local consumers in January 2020 and commenced Model Y crossover deliveries in January 2021.
The facility reached its one-millionth vehicle production milestone on August 13, 2022, and its two-millionth vehicle milestone on September 6, 2023.
On October 11, 2024, Tesla announced the Shanghai factory had produced its three-millionth vehicle.
Giga Shanghai is Tesla’s largest global production facility, with an annual capacity of about one million vehicles. It serves both domestic customers and functions as an export hub.
Tesla China recorded wholesale sales of 86,700 vehicles in November, including both domestic sales and exports from China to overseas markets, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
This represents a 9.95 percent increase from 78,856 units in the same period last year and a 40.98 percent rise from 61,497 units in October.
Its November deliveries in China and exports from the Shanghai factory are expected to be available later today.
