    • In the January-April period, Model Y retail sales in China stood at 101,873 units, down 19.61 percent year-on-year.
    • The Model Y exported 13,976 units in April, up 149.30 percent year-on-year.

The Model Y, Tesla‘s (NASDAQ: TSLA) most important model, saw a decline in sales in China last month, as more locally produced units of the crossover were used for exports.

Retail sales of the Model Y in China in April were 19,984 units, down 24.18 percent from 26,356 in the same month last year and down 58.53 percent from 48,189 in March, according to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) shared today by automotive media outlet Yiche.

The Tesla crossover contributed 69.56 percent of Tesla’s 28,731 retail sales in China in April, CnEVPost’s calculations show.

In the January-April period, retail sales of the Model Y in China were 101,873 units, down 19.61 percent year-on-year, contributing 62.37 percent of Tesla’s retail sales of 163,338 units in China in the same period.

Tesla has a factory in Shanghai that produces the Model 3 sedan and Model Y. The factory is its largest in the world, with an annual capacity of about 1 million units.

Tesla’s pattern is to produce cars for export in the first half of the quarter and for the local market in the second half, it previously said.

The Model Y saw a significant increase in exports last month, which is partly responsible for the model’s declining sales in China.

The Model Y exported 13,976 units in April, up 149.30 percent year-on-year and up 1,563.81 percent from March, according to CnEVPost’s calculations.

In the January-April period, the Model Y exported 21,381 units, down 47.78 percent year-on-year.

Tesla launched the facelifted five-seat Model Y in China on January 10, with deliveries beginning on February 26.

Notably, the model’s appeal has declined, with the emergence of more local competitors.

Chinese customers who buy any variant of the Model Y before June 30 can take advantage of five-year zero-interest financing, Tesla announced on April 22.

Model 3 retail sales in China in April were 8,747 vehicles, up 72.69 percent from 5,065 a year ago but down 66.28 percent from 25,938 in March.

In the January-April period, Model 3 retail sales in China were 61,465 vehicles, up 65.59 percent year-on-year, contributing 37.63 percent of Tesla’s retail sales in China in the same period.

The Model 3 exported 15,752 units in April, down 37.34 percent year-on-year while up 307.98 percent from March.

In the January-April period, the Model 3 exported 46,494 units, down 40.59 percent year-on-year.

Tesla China sold 58,459 vehicles in April, including those sold in China as well as those exported from China to overseas markets, according to data released by the CPCA last week.

The US electric vehicle (EV) maker sold 28,731 vehicles in China’s domestic market in April, down 8.56 percent from 31,421 in the same month a year ago and down 61.24 percent from 74,127 in March.

Giga Shanghai exported 29,728 vehicles in April, down 3.31 percent from 330,746 in the same month last year while up 532.38 percent from 4,701 in March.
