Scout hasn’t even put a truck in the hands of a customer yet, but it’s already showing that it knows its customers better than many other EV brands out there.
The Volkswagen-owned truck brand revealed a new concept version of its upcoming Terra electric pickup on Sunday, slathered in a muted, earthy-toned paint scheme that Scout calls “Silo Green Metallic.” While the new color might shine like it’s ready to hit the auto show circuit, the new look makes it seem like the truck is ready to be dragged through the mud on its way to work.
Let’s talk about what’s new in Scout’s latest concept truck.
Starting on the outside, the most obvious of the upgrades (aside from the paint) are the 18-inch Clutch wheels wrapped in 37-inch BF Goodrich K03 tires. Between the tires are new side-steps that flow right into the truck’s body, and on the front sits a bull bar with integrated tow hooks and a shackle hole just in case your rig gets a little too far off the beaten path.
On the roof of the truck is a sleek, modernized basket. Scout managed to also integrate a full set of pivoting chase lights on the basket that look right at home with the rest of the pickup’s appearance. Finally, a rugged cargo box is positioned neatly at the front of the bed.
I have to admit, this combo makes the truck look damn good from the outside. But the automaker also saved some surprises for the inside, too.
The interior is now adorned by a new terracotta accent color across the seatbacks, dashboard and steering wheel. The headliner and door straps feature a tough fabric look. Scout also reworked its knobs and toggle switches to give them a more rugged and tactile feel (you can see more defined ridges on the dials and knurling on the toggles), plus reworked the appearance of its overhead console.
This all fits with the brand. Scout’s heritage is with blue-collar Americans. The company knows that in order to keep the same customer base, it needs to make its EVs something that its customers want. That means making the truck all about function—you know, solid rear axle and body on frame—while still modernizing the platform to support EV underpinnings and, of course, a range-extender.
The Scout Traveler SUV and Terra pickup are due out in 2027. The Scout Terra is meant to compete with hard-hitters like the Ford F-150 Lightning and Chevy Silverado EV, while also taking on newcomer lifestyle-branded EVs like the Rivian R1T. Scout is expected to price both vehicles at under $60,000.
