Geely Auto has completed the trial production of its first EX5 at its plant in Puwakarta, Indonesia, marking a milestone in its EV internationalization strategy.
The Chinese auto giant shared the development in an announcement yesterday, saying that it will provide Indonesian consumers with intelligent mobility solutions that will contribute to sustainable development in the region.
The EX5 is the E5 SUV (sport utility vehicle) of Geely’s sub-brand Geely Galaxy in China, which now has a starting price of RMB 107,800 ($14,950) in its home market.
Geely announced its entry into the Indonesian market in January and is working with local partner PT Handal Indonesia Motor (HIM) to build a local production system.
The Chinese automaker began local pre-sales of the EX5 at the Indonesia auto show in February and held a delivery ceremony for the 1,000th EX5 on April 19.
Successful trial production proves that the production line design and processes have been fully validated, laying the foundation for mass production, Geely said.
The EX5 will officially start mass production in Indonesia in the fourth quarter of 2025 according to the established plan, with an expected annual production capacity of 20,000 units, said the company.
Geely plans to launch five to seven models in Indonesia over the next three years, including battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and gasoline vehicles.
The Indonesian plant will serve not only local customers but also the wider ASEAN region, according to the company.
Geely has already set up 15 dealership stores in Indonesia and plans to expand the number to 100 in the next three years.
